Greetings from the shores of sunny Oahu, Hawaii.
I flew from San Francisco to 'The Big Island'. The plane was delayed by half an hour which was going to make for a tight transfer to Honolulu. I asked the flight attendant whether this was going to be a problem. She laughed quietly and guessed that this was my first time to Hawaii. 'You'll be fine. You'll see what I mean when we land."
The plane touched down and we taxi'd to the terminal. I was sitting in an aisle seat so couldn't get a good view of the terminal layout. The pilot switched off the seat belt sign and the passengers were quickly on their way. I stepped into the terminal to realise that the airport only had 8 gates and that we were the only plane on the tarmac. The terminal was open-air. She was a little more modern than Koh Samui - but only really just. The tropical holiday feeling had begun!
The flight attendant walked by and smiled. "There's no real rush in Hawaii. They call it Hawaiian time. Enjoy your stay. Hau'oli Lanui (pronounced how-oh-lay la-new-ee)." That's Hawaiian for "Happy Holidays."
Needless to say I made it in time for the flight to Honolulu and I've settled in at the hotel on Waikiki Beach.
Today we're off for a hike up 230 metre-high Diamond Head - a 100,000 year old volcanic cone that overlooks Waikiki. Most of the area is out-of-bounds as she's used by the military as an artillery observation post; housing all sorts of antennaes and radars for their defense department.
I'll add some photo's upon our return.
Bye for now.
