¡Hola!
So we´ve been using Granada as a base from which to visit other places nearby, such as la Laguna de Apoyo, Volcan Masaya and Volcan Mombacho (see separate blogs). Granada is the largest and grandest colonial town in Nicaragua, more wealthy and prosperous than its liberal nemesis to the west, Leon. I expected to really like Granada, and it didn´t disappoint with its beatifully intact architecture and bright colours, but the atmosphere is very touristy and the main strips are lined with a homogenous collection of expensive, foreign-owned bars and restaurants, with the locals priced out of these areas. We did, however, find some good places to eat and drink, and we had a very relaxing time here staying in a lovely hotel for three nights last week. Our room was nice and cool and we had cable TV with English channels - a real treat - we still haven´t had a hot shower yet since we left the UK though... I´m really looking forward to finding one of those!
We got some great photos and videos from the bell tower of a little church, with the main cathederal and Volcan Mombacho in the distance. Some little dude came up a rang the bells when we were up there... aaarg, i´m a little bit scared of bells.
