Thursday 26th March
Arrived back in Singapore, made our way to the hotel we had booked in the Geylang area of the city. We used the MRT to get to Geylang, which took us from the airport to very close to the hotel. Later we walked back to the station and got the train into the marina area of the city. We walked along the harbour front by the Singapore flyer (which is a big wheel) and then up the river bank in towards the city centre. It was very nice along the river bank with lots of bars and restaurants, and we found one which served hand pulled real ale! We sat down and ordered two halves and had a shock when given the bill of sixteen dollars, eight pound!!
We went back to the area of the hotel for something to eat, there were a lot of Chinese restaurants around. When we booked the hotel, which was recently renovated and reasonably priced, we didn't realise that it was in the red light district of the city, until later, walking back through the streets there wasn't too much evidence only a few bars, until we arrived back at the hotel and found that the hotel opposite had several “ladies” sat out the front waiting for business.
Friday 27th March
We took the MRT train down to shopping mall where the transport to Sentosa island went from. There was a chair lift, boats, buses and a monorail. The chairlift was very expensive so we went over by monorail, anyone going beware: the ticket machine is placed out of the way and they try to sell you a pass for all the rides on the Island. The island has been created into a resort for people to get away from the city, it has hotels restaurants, beaches, cafés and a train which runs up and down the coast (free). It is a very nice safe place with no cars, the only draw back is the view out to sea. We have never seen so many ships in one area of water before, huge ships docked in the bay carrying all sorts of cargo.
We took a bus up the east coast and walked along the sea front in the park. There were lots of people about, walking, cycling, jogging, roller blading and using the barbecue facilities that were along the shore. It was nice to see lots of women exercising on their own even when it was going dark, Singapore is a very safe place. We walked for about eight miles back to the hotel. There were some great facilities for free, children's play areas and outdoor gyms and none of them had been vandalised in any way. We got back to the hotel very tired!
Saturday 28th March
We wandered down Orchard road, which is the road where all the shopping malls are, it was very busy. It is quite a long stretch of road, a shoppers paradise.
We carried on along orchard road and in to road, we went to the art museum, there was a modern art exhibition going on, the art wasn't really our taste but the building was fascinating. It had been a school before being converted to the museum and it was lovely wandering around.
After the museum we continued along the road and eventually ended up outside Raffles Hotel. We just had to call in to the Long bar for a Singapore Gin Sling. The floor in the Long bar is covered in peanut shells, apparently it is a long custom that the shells are thrown down. The bar was very busy!
When we had finished at Raffles we made our way to the park, this was the old garrison and at one time had a good few to the sea, in the colonial times it was the place to be! It started to go dark so we headed back to the Hotel.
Sunday 29th March
Got up and packed again! It didn't take too long (we now have it off to a fine art) and we were soon out and on our way back to the city. We headed for the History museum. Going round the museum was good but it did take a long time as you had a head set telling you all the information about the items you were looking at. We were in the museum longer than planned and had to got and get the cases and head off to the airport as soon as we had finished.
