rob in central america
i can't quite remember the last time i wrote but i believe i was in guatemala at the lake. it was beautiful and very relaxing.l i didn't do anything but sit on porch of the hostel and read newsweek magazing. i only stopped for meals and to take a few pictures. to get to the hostel you have to take a bus to the lake and then a small motor boat to the other side of the lake.some australian guys ran it and we all had a good time the five days i was there.
when my time to relax was over i took a boat and then a bus through guatemala city again and out to Tikal National Park where i hiked through jungle to climb on top of Mayan Indian ruins from 700 B.C. i pretty much though i was indiana jones...which gave me the liscence to run past ¨do not pass'¨ signs and be chased back past them buy park rangers. it was a day i'll never forget. pictures will hopefull be up soon.
while i was there i met a danish couple from amsterdam (sp?) and a couple from austria...both only a few years older than me and we all went out to dinner together. the danish couple and i were headed to the same island off the coast of belize so we traveled together for about four days.
i only spent three days in belize. it has beautiful white sand beaches and clear water, palm trees and lots of boats and reef. i snorkled in around a mango grove just off the island but over all not my favorite place. most of the people speak english as a first language so it have become a popular destination for americans who vacationed in mexico before.
after belize my plan was to go to honduras again. the easiest. fastest, adn cheapest way to get there was to take a bus 6 hours to a beach in belize, spend the night, and take a boat in the morning for 2 hours to the coast of honduras. the bus ride turned into 8 hours when the driver just skipped my stop. i had to stay in another villiage in belize and wake up at 430 am to take another bus two hours back where i came from and then take the boat to honduras. i got on the boat at 930 to leave belize. at 1230 we finally left as the migration official decided to take his sweet time showing up. but at least were were off.
after losing one engine, running out of gas, getting towed by another boat, and everybody getting seasick i made it to honduras at 530...amost 7 hours later than scheduled. my frustration cooled off when i got in a big bus in honduras that actually had a truck horn that played ¨la cucarracha¨.
the next day i finally made it to tegucigalpa, honduras where i met up with Greentree Community Church's mission trip. i've spent the last three days with them building houses for hurracaine mitch victims and running a sports camp for the kids. it has been refreshing to do something for somebody else.
today however, i'm sick again and will spend most of the day in bed...hopefully leaving tomorrow for isla utila, off the coast of honduras. i've only got 8 days left and i'm hoping to feel better for all of them.
