Sunday 12 November 2006 - The Great Ocean Road: Adelaide to Melbourne
Picked up our car, named him Lance and set off on our road trip! Just outside Adelaide stopped at the little German town of Hahndorf. Had a walk around sampling some cheese, fudge and olives....... finishing off enjoying a German brockwurst sat by a spit roasting pig! Set off and met the Princes Highway (coast route) making stops at Meningie, Kingston SE, Robe and chose our driving song - going slightly crazy to "I want to break free!" Got to Mount Gambier stopped at the Blue Lake then ended up in jail!! Just accommodation! Cells converted into dorms, they even had a pet Alpaca.
Monday 13 November 2006 - Mount Gambier to Apollo Bay
Left Mount Gambier also leaving South Australia and entering Victoria. Quick stops at Portsland, Port Fairy, Tower Hill and Warrambool where just after the Great Ocean Road officially started! More stops at the Bay of Martyrs, the Grotto, London Bridge, Loch and Gorge and the 12 Apostles, with only 7 actually remaining! Walked down Gibsons Steps onto Gibson Beach then back on the road. Running on empty drove towards Lavers Hill. Bit of a panic as we were driving through a forest with not many cars around, made it to a petrol station which was shut!! Luckily there was another one a bit further along that was due to close in 10 minutes!! Phew! Drove on to Apollo Bay where we spent the night in beach front accommodation!
Tuesday 14 November 2006 - Apollo Bay to Melbourne
Back track to Otway National Park to walk through the rainforest then on to Cape Otway. Driving back we spotted lots of koalas just sitting in the trees! One was making a funny grunting noise - like a motorbike! Walked around Lorne stopping for lunch at Pt Roadknight beach where Ellie got to drive a bit of the Great Ocean Road - even if it was off the road, round and round a car park! Stopped at Airleys Inlet and walked to the lighthouse discovering it wasn't just any lighthouse - it was the famous lighthouse featured in 'Round the Twist!' Did some surf spotting at Bells Beach - made famous in Point Break! Short stop in Torquay then straight on to Melbourne driving round and round the city in rush hour trying to find a hostel! Decided on staying at The Ritz in St Kilda and made it in time for free wine and cheese night! Lovely!
