Sunday 29 October 2006 - Kakadu
Left the camp early (after Ellie searching the camp for her book with no luck! Mystery - must have been one of those dingos we heard last night - apparently they steal shoes!) and stopped at Yellow water billabong which is part of South Alligator River. Being dry season the river which would usually be high with water was totally dry.
Saw loads of cute tiny frogs and eventually found the croc that lived in the billabong! Craig attempted to catch Barramundi, quite popular in the area but it's a big deal to catch one.... today Craig had no luck!
Stopped at Cooinda Lodge then drove over Jim Jim Billabong before stopping at Maguk to see cathedral termite mounds. These were literally mounds of dirt made by the termites. Impressive little b*ggers! The wood found here is used to make the best didgeridoos.
Had a little swim at Moline Rockhole before lunch at Mary River Roadhouse.
Picked up some firewood before getting to Pine Creek where we waved off some of the group. Then onto Edith Falls - Rita, Ken and Dotty enjoying it down at the bottom waterfall while Ellie and the rest of the group climbed up to the top. Rainbow forming at the waterfall, just a shame couldn't swim with the camera, so just enjoyed swimming in and out of the waterfall.
Got to Katherine and Craig went shopping while the rest of us went to the drive in liquor store! Poor Craig forgetting to close his trailer sending the food flying out all over the road. Lucky it was only one jar of mayonnaise that was gone - we were holding onto our wine!
Got to camp and it soon became apparent we were sharing it with loads of wallaby's and big fat ugly frogs!!
After dinner, we toasted some marshmallows on the campfire (Rita was very excited about this as she had never done it before - nice, but felt sick after about 3!) and experienced Craig's damper - famous Ozzie campfire bread! The group still asking Ellie about her book - maybe she was going on about it a bit too much!
Managed very little sleep due to the wallaby's and the big fat frogs rustling round our tent! Being so hot at night anyway it certainly didn't help being in the tent right next to the campfire!
