Rita & Ellie's Travels
Wednesday 27 September 2006 - Fox Glacier
Sel went on her full day hike while we opted for the Helihike! A 2hour hike on the ice, with a little help from a helicopter to get us up there!
Stumpy (the short bus!) took us to the Helipad where we had some safety chat, got given our boots and assigned to a helicopter. Rita got to sit in the front next to the pilot. It was an 8 minute flight up to the Glacier (the highest point you could hike).
Once there, we were given our crampons to attach to our boots which would help us walk on the ice. Our guide hacking steps for us along the way took us exploring the ice for 2 hours. No set route to go so it's just a case of what's safe and choosing your way.
In and out of ice caves, jumping over crevasses, finding moulins and learning all about ice! Even seeing blue ice. Fun couple of hours then our ride came to get us!
Rainy afternoon so watched cheesy chick flicks!!
