Saturday 15 July 2006 - New York New York!
As you can tell from our first entry we got here safely! (after a slight confusion with another Eleanor Michael who was apparently armed and dangerous and was not to be let in the country!)
Battled the subways and made it to Dexter House - our home for the next 5 nights, dumped our bags (never really wanting to carry them again!).... straight out to dinner to an american diner, a white wine and soda in New York, the City that never sleeps...... we were in bed by 9pm (we blame the weeks of farewell drinking!)...
Sunday 16 July 2006 - Yankees, The Bronx
Took a subway up to the Bronx, made friends with an ex Yankees Player and wife 'Patty!' who tried to explain the rules to us - mix of rounders and cricket - simple enough we thought! Sat in the highest tier in the sweltering heat, such an american atmosphere, birthday mentions, prizes for when camera stops on you and even a proposal. All standing, hand on heart to sing the national anthem before the game. Half time pitch clear up was entertainment in itself, men in white shorts dancing with their 'sweepers' to YMCA!
Left the stadium to renditions of New York New York as 'we' won 6:4. Taking something from the americans, our Hi-5 obsession began!!
Talking about how easy it was to get around New York on the subway..... then missed our stop - just a little extra walk, not a problem!
After such an eventful night the night before thought we would take it easy with a trip to the Cinema on Broadway to see 'Little Man'.... it is true the americans did get rather excited and clapped throughout! Wild night - in bed by 10pm!!
Monday 17 July 2006 - Lower Manhatten
Took a subway over to Brooklyn so we could walk the mile of Brooklyn Bridge approaching Manhatten, views were fantastic and there was a lot of 'Oh My God, We are in New York!!'
Lots of suits as we passed Wall Street on the way to Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Took the ferry over to Staten Island (didn't find THE bar Anna) had lunch then back on board...... we did have a comical moment when some cool dude was strutting his stuff down the street...then went smack bang into a lampost, he literally bounced off it...... well, we're still laughing anyway!
More amazing views of the Financial District from the ferry approaching Lower Manhatten.
Walked through Battery Park up to Ground Zero to pay our respects. Uptown to Soho, walked down Canal Street... a little different to the one in Manchester.
Hard day! Had a break in Little Italy with a nice cold beer.... just the one, not going too crazy!!
Strolled through China Town to find somewhere for dinner - easier said than done. Everything was written in chinese and no one to ask as it was literally China plus Rita and Ellie! Ellie happily strolling along until a concerned Rita starts screaming 'Faster faster, we need to get out of China!' Eventually found a restaurant written in English although it was still a task to order..... still no idea what we got!!
Tuesday 18 July 2006 - Midtown Manhatten
First stop Empire State Building, lift up to 86th floor - didn't fancy walking! As you can imagine, fantastic views!
Next stop Crysler Building (as featured in Sex & The City). Another TV/Film moment in Grand Central Station, looks exactly how it does on the telly!
Time for some shopping....
Bloomingdales, then onto FAO Schwarz, THE toy store as featured in Big and Home Alone Lost in New York!..... such good fun! and yep played on the 'BIG' piano as well as with everything else!
Nice stroll down 5th Ave, on to Tiffany's. Ended up causing a bit of a scene howling with laughter so thought we best get out quick! Passing all the swanky shops on the way down. Quick stop at the Rockefeller Centre and then on to the New York Central Library. Short rest in Bryant Park before onto Macy's..... went to get our 11% discount card but that's all we got!
Home of Major League Baseball, took a look around Madison Square Gardens.... almost managing to get into the Madonna concert, but not quite.
Times Square! All lit up! Happily strolling along, amazing! Nipped into Madam Tussauds to have our pics taken with a wax Nicholas Cage..... Hoylake can keep Robbie, Brad and George - not in the slightest bit jealous!! (or annoyed!)
Tea at Planet Hollywood (more stars!!) then got caught in the biggest thunderstorm! Serves us right for staying out after 10pm!
