Hello to anyone reading this! This is my first post concerning my year studying in Japan. I thought before I leave, I'd make a record of how I've come to this point.
I first really became interested in Japan and its culture around 8th grade. As a sophomore in highschool, I took my first Japanese language classes at a community college, and became hooked. When I actually started attending college, I continued taking Japanese, and it was not long until I declared it as my major. I have always had an interest in travel, so I have wanted to go to Japan for a long time. Over the years, I met many people who had been to Japan for various reasons, and couldn't help feeling a bit jealous. I never thought I'd be given this opportunity to study abroad!
It was once I started attending ASU as a junior thatI really looked into study abroad programs. I went to a "Study Abroad 101" session and decided it was something I wanted to do. I got my passport as a first step. I met with an advisor and discussed my options. I was not able to apply for a program untl the end of my senior year, but by then I had decided which school to apply for. I applied to Tokyo International University, and nervously awaited a reply. Alas, I was accepted! When my acceptance materials arrived, I had more papers to write and fill out. I gave all my information, including demographic, health, Japanese language ability, and preferances for a host family. I wrote a personal introduction to the host family as well. Several weeks later, I recieved my Certificate of Eligibility in the mail, along with information and a letter from the host family I will be staying with. I then got my Visa and most technicalities were done.
I now have less than 5 days until I leave for Japan. It will be my first time overseas, as well as my first time living away from my family for an extended amount of time. As time has passed, my mixed feelings of excitedness and nervousness have increased. I got a new laptop, camera, clothes, and various other things I will need during my year abroad. All I need now is a few minor things and to pack! I will write more about my host family and location once I'm there. Next time I post, I'll be in Japan!
