Fraser Island Part 1A
Well, what an adventure of a weekend we have had!! It will take us some days to do all the blogs and upload all the piccies!!
We set off Thursday night and arrived in Hervey Bay on the Mainland at about 11pm at our hostel which we thought was a 7 bed dorm with ensuite, we had paid for all 7 beds even though there was 5 of us so that we could get the room to ourselves. But when we got there we had a whole unit to ourselves with a lounge, kitchen, 3 bedrooms and bathroom all for $28 per person so we watched TV and had a few drinks!
We got up early and re-packed Damien's car which was pretty jammed packed and drove to Aussie Trax at 6:30 to pick up our 4wd. We had to watch a video about safety and how to drive in sand and what to do when you get stuck in soft sand and a big warning bit about the Dingoes (wild dogs) - all a bit daunting and scary at 6:30am!!
Only 2 people could be insured to drive the 4wd so Iain & Damien took it. After a once over around the vehicle we were off to the Barge to take us across to the island. The first few km's on the road was a little hairy as it was like driving a tractor and we had a few stalling episodes but we got to the ferry where Iian had to reverse the 4wd on - tricky business!!
We arrived on Fraser Island at a bout 9:00am and like they said there are no roads, you just have to follow the tracks in the sand and off we went to our 1st stop of Lake Boojamin. It really is like something from a Jurassic Park ride at Florida as you are chucked all over the place and bumping around and we were so nervous about getting stuck in the sand!
We got to Lake Boojamin - about 1hr to drive 10km - not really any signs so you go by the car's km meter and the distances on the map.
Lake Boojamin was absolutely beautiful - clear waters, white sand -gorgeous!
The boys had the urge to run to the top of the sand dunes so me & Nadine followed and then she rolled all the way down from the top - not me tho - didn't want to get sand everywhere!
We then made our way to Lake Boomen which was nice but didn't have the pristine sand and it was more reedy and bushes were growing in it but we had a nice picnic lunch in a fenced off enclosure (to stop Dingoes coming in!) and then we got onto the beach to find our campsite for the evening.
Beach driving is completely different as you are allowed to go up 80km where inland you can only do 35km (and that's a struggle coz it's hilly sand and rocks!) You are not allowed to take the 4wd in the saltwater so you have to avoid the sea and there are fresh water creeks running along the beach so there are deep creek dips you have to be careful of as they can cause washouts where you get completely stuck in the creek!!
Part 1B to follow at my lunch break......
