July 14th. Stockholm
We all got going earlier than any other day as we had a lot planned today. Everyone but my parents headed over the Vasa ship museum. The Vasa ship was the greatest, most elaborate, ship of its time (Late 1620s). It was commissioned by king Gustavus Adolphus (Gusties will shine tonight, Gusties will shine...) to be a testament to the power of Sweden. It took 2 years to build and was as much a work of art as it was a warship. On its maiden voyage it lasted 40 minutes and then sank in waters of Stockholm. Apparently it was too top heavy and a stiff wind blew it over. There had been various attempts to raise it over the years and they were finally able to get it out of the water in 1961. They then began to go through the ship and all of the artifacts and preserve everything. Finally in 1990 they opened the Vasa museum with, at its centerpiece, the restored ship. It is quite an impressive sight and feat of restoration. While we were at the Vasa, my parents went to the Stockholm city hall and climbed the tower (all 300+ steps). We all met Marie at Skansen, Stockholm's open air history museum. The museum has collected historical buildings from all over Sweden and set them in a park. It was interesting to see all the old buildings with historical reenactors showing what life was like when their buildings were in use. We ate lunch at the park and spent about three hours walking around. In addition to the buildings, Skansen had animals like reindeer, sheep, seals, goats, and cows. When we were ready to leave, we said goodbye to Marie (thank you for everything, Marie, we enjoyed our time with you). Tonight is our last night in Stockholm. Tomorrow we leave for a family friend's farm in the country. We will stay overnight there and then head to Oslo on Sunday.
We had an early night tonight as we have to get going early tomorrow. Rather than going out for dinner, we went to the grocery store, got some stuff for dinner, and Ellie made us a nice pasta meal. We ate out on our porch. It was a nice way to end our time in Stockholm.
