Ouuuuccchhhh! Woke up at four thirty in the morning and my feet felt like I've got trench foot. I was big and brave and ripped that bloody blister right off good riddance. Got up at five thirty - jet lag still there then. We set off at a respectable nine thirty ish heading for a tourist town called Nikko. We had our unlimited JR Pass (Japanese Rail) so we could travel everywhere for nothing (well paid abut four hundred quid each for the two week pass, but that was all paid for). Got on the bullet train, this was a good name for it because it shifted very quickly, saw Mount Fuji out of the window - was very impressive. A little lad about two and a bit and was sat next to me with his mum and kept pointing at me, silently his mum kept pushing his hand down, it kept popping back up, pointing straight at my face. I gave him a smile, their stop came and as his mum led him off the train his head was turned like an owl to carry on staring at me (to be fair there are no white faces about so I must have looked more strange than usual, I liked it). We got to Utsunomiva station and changed onto a more local train to Nikko. The mountains were getting bigger and bigger capped in snow on the approach, it took about an hour from Utsunomiva, got off the train and the surroundings were like nothing else we had seen in Japan so far, a small town with the mountains and no cars. We walked for a short while to find the temples, on the way we found a famous bridge which to be honest wasn't all that. Opposite the bridge was the entrance to the temple quite a few steps up to it, nice photo opportunity, smile. Got up there and would you believe it two hours on the train and it was encased in a giant metal warehouse and was being 'done up'. We had a look round and found some deep fried chicken which we though was traditional Japanese as they went mad for it but in actual fact I think it was like KFC. We had a few photo's taken then headed back for the station, time was three thirty and the train didn't go until four twenty so we went for a cup of tea in a little hostel with unlimited refills. The Japanese lady brought over the bill and Sarah said 'Konishiwa' as she walked away, 'damn it I just said hello again instead of thank you'. She is a wally. We got on the train and admired the views again. It was now early evening and we were going to find another electric city but we decided to go back to the room to get the map that we had cut out of a travel guide, we got this, sat down, and couldn't be bothered to move so went on Youtube and watched five episodes of the Inbetweeners. I had a Japanese equivalent of a pot noodle and we crashed out.
