Well clearly the plane did was it was supposed to do and we have arrived in Bangkok
For anyone planning on travelling overseas in the near future ... warning .. they are anal about the amount of liquids, gels and aerosals you carry in carry on luggage ... an incredibly annoying way to start your trip ... BUT as I always say, thank goodness no one has tried to smuggle a bomb up their bottom, otherwise it would be full body cavity searches for EVERYONE .... a much more depressing way to start your holiday (for most people anyway)
Anyway, we got through the check in process and spent a pleasant few hours in the lounge drinking champagne and eating nibbles trying to calm my nerves. I must confess yesterday if I could have cancelled my trip I would have ... not that I'm a nervous traveller, but I think with Nicks death overseas constantly on my mind, it was hard to leave everything familiar. The constant thought of "what if I never come home" kept going through my mind. Thinking of how souless our home would be if we never walked back through the front door was very depressing.
Anyway .. back to Bangkok. My goodness ... the new airport is amazing!!
Its a massive structure made primarily of concrete, grey steel and glass ... sounds a bit bland, but boy, they've pulled it off well ... its a real work of art. (As soon as I can get faster broadband I'll upload some photos of it)
BUT not only is it amazing, its massive ... and after feeling like they parked the plane halfway between Brisbane and Bangkok, making us walk the rest of the way dragging our luggage, we breezed through customs and happily caught our courtesy bus to our day hotel. (We've got 18 hours to kill till our flight through to Athens)
If you ever need a layover hotel in Bangkok I'd highly recommend the Novotel Suvarnbhumi Airport Hotel ... its also MAGNIFICENT. Awesome rooms, and our lunch ... OMG .. .I've never seen food like it on a buffet ... everything from pan fried foie gras with tamarind sauce to peking duck, full italian smorgasboard, a BBQ selection that would leave most resturants looking embarrassed and a dessert buffet that was to die for!!
Needless to say after lunch we've taken some time out for a nanna nap
Well thats about it for now ... for all my wonderful squash partners ... my lifted off toe nail has finally exploded ... the cabin pressure nearly drove me insane ... just adds fuel to my theory that exercise is NOT good for you and is in fact dangerous to your health!! ... note to self ... tighten shoelaces for squash.
We check out tonight at about 10pm and start the next part of the adventure off to Athens.
Jen & Pete are leaving tomorrow for Athens via LA, New York and London. I imagine they'll be a real bundle of joy when they arrive .. but nothing that some grappa won't fix.
