Well folks, its been over 2 weeks since I left for me travels and my word has it flown by. Iv'e done so much, and met so many people. With a lump in my throat I left Heathrow for singapore to endure a gruelling 13 hour trip, which to my suprise was quite nice because for the first time in my life I managed to sleep whilst travelling!
Singapore is great. A very clean and very cultured city that you have to see to appreciate. I stayed in a hostel called "The Beetlebox" which was very welcoming and very busy. It was right in the centre of the "Paya Lebar" area which was very traditional and very interesting. We arrived about 10pm and I was bloody starving as plane food isnt the most satisfying at the best of times. So Chris and myself went on a wonder to see what we could find. We stumbled upon a traditional singapore food court (basically a large canteen scattered with benches and chairs and surrounded by locals selling various dishes). I went for "Fried Carrot Cake". It was more like fried carrot cack. Rather than a wholesome piece of delicious sponge you and I would enjoy with a cup of tea, I recieved what could only be described as an omellette filled with jelly. I ate it anyway cos I was bloody hungry. The following day we spent mostly sightseeing, taking photos and basically crambing in as much as we could in the one full day we had.
We arrived in Bangkok on the 16th of Feb for 3 days. What a mental city. You could litterally walk past a 5 star hotel and next to it would be a shanty town, then another 5 star hotel. As we landed at the airport you could litterally see the thick layer of smog from the sky. The hostel was very nice, but more like a hotel so meeting people here was difficult. We did however meet one guy called spence who was travelling on his own. He was a right surfer dude, and has pretty much tagged along with us through Thailand until Chris and myself travel to Aus. Whilst we didnt travel to any Ladyboy shows, I almost managed to get mugged by them! Walking home one night I found myself surrounded by 4 of the ugly blighters under a bridge, where they were basically trying to sell us a bit of hows ya father! (if ya know what I mean) After wrestling my way through I instantly realised my wallet was gone (full of cards, licences and money), so I turned round and somehow managed to wrestle it back off the weirdo. A very lucky escape. We visited the Khaosam road to pick up some bargains, but this place didnt have a patch on the Mo Chit market. We spent a day there and I dont think we got round half the place. But what a place! There were people with no legs crawling around on the floor, the weirdest food and drink I think I have ever seen including a drink full of worms which I had to try. It was actually quite pleasant. We found the best eating place where you could basically get a meal including steak and lobster for about £3.00, so we went there every night.
On our last day we met another guy from Sheffield called Shaun, who had been living in bangkok for 2 years, and had basically been living it large for 2 years! Never before have I met someone who could drink 2 bottles of whisky a night, have no sleep for 48 hours, party constantly, sleep with several Thai women, then quite happily go to work straight after! Madness. Bloody nice chap tho! Oh yeah and if you go to Thailand you have to have a thai massage, it hurts but its amazing.
So, next we're off to Phuket (or "f*** It"), look out for the blog, and in the meantime ive gotta make a short trip to Russia. So, Moscow (Must go). s*** joke I know :-)
