Exploring the known and unknown
Day 10
30 April 2013
Chiang Mai to Bangkok
Last night I spent time in an internet café with a fast connection. I needed to find information regarding my ongoing travel. It was obvious that I was tired as I was looking and contemplating flying over Laos and go straight to Saigon. I was in the middle of booking a flight with Turkish Airlines who offered the best deal. At the moment when I entered the page for payment (commitment) I thought: Hang on you are going to regret this later, best to wait until the morning. And that is what I did. Early this morning I re-evaluated the situation and decided that although it is difficult to do this I should push ahead
The problems are often the border crossings. What I am facing now is the following: Overnight train to Bangkok, hang around the station (or stay for one night-however I don't much rate big cities.) Then take the train to the border of Cambodia. I arrive too late to cross so I need to find accommodation there.
The next morning I would need to get a tuk tuk to the border. Go through the customs facilities, Walk through no-man’s land, walk through the Welcome to Cambodia gate, Get my passport stamped, finger printed ,baggage check and then get on a bus to the next town. From there get another bus to Phnon Phen or Sam Reap, then another bus to Vietnam, cross the border and on to Saigon. This is the story I read in Lonely Planet and Seat 61.
This just seems all a bit much and easier to fly over it all. However…….I went to the station and bought my first ticket from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. This is the only way to see if all this is as tiring as it looks and to experience it. My main concern is the heat. I think that by the time I reach Saigon that my sense of achievement will make it all worthwhile.
