21/1/10 - day 43.
alarm woke me up at half 5 and i was tempted to ignore it as i was very tired after loud people and thin walls had kept me awake during the night. but i did get up and left for the bus station, which i got a cab to as it was still dark outside. no waiting, got straight on a bus to tela which left at 6am and got there about half 8.
i walked to a place to stay called posada del sol which had been reccommended to me by a french guy id met at lgo de yojoa. every room had a single and double bed, something which the girl told me after i pointed out there was only one of me. had my own shower and toilet as well.
i showered and went into town to get breakfast (eggs, ham, beans and tortillas). tela was the first place that i actually felt a little anxious about walking around by myself. the french guy i met told me how just 3 days ago a man was shot in the central park of town in the morning and by the afternoon it was business as usual. like its so common, the people arent gonna let it disrupt their day! had it not been for this story, i would have felt fine as the place actually seemed quite nice.
i went to a tour place that operate tours to garifuna villages and around to see if i could do one the next day but it was minimum 3 people and they hadnt had any other interest for that day. from there i decided to go a visit the 2nd largest botanical garden in the world in nearby lancetilla. it was alright, nice to walk around a few of the trails they have there, but basically just loads and loads of different types of trees, plants and flowers from all over the world. did have a nice swimming hole though which was good to cool off in on a sweltering day.
in the afternoon, i walked to a nearby beach about 1km away as the stretch of beach right infront of the town wasnt that nice. again, i was feeling slightly uneasy about walking by myself in unfamilar territory but only cos of that shooting story and i didnt wanna let that put me off. there were other people around and i didnt get any bad vibes about the place so i knew id be ok.
the beach was much more what you expect of the carribbean side - white and powdery. stayed there til about 4ish when i had to be back at the laudrette near my hostel where id dropped my clothes off at that morning,
went online for a while, then realised i hadnt eaten anything in like 9 hours! i had to put this right, so i went for a wander and found a chinese restaurant which i thought would be a nice change. i asked how big the portions were and the guy said they big enough for 2. i was mildly sceptical as the prices didnt seem to reflect this. he wasnt wrong though. i ordered chow mein special and it was comically big. piled so high i was embarrassed to be sat there alone with it. it was like another person at the table. (which had that actually been the case would have been pretty handy). im happy to report that i ate 95% of it, leaving little more than scraps and washed it down with a honduran beer - barena - which i really liked.
went back to the hostel, fairly convined i was actually gonna burst and got chatting to a couple other people staying there. a czech girl who´d been living in england for a few years (near cullompton of all places!!) and who loved football, and a finnish farmer who for the last 35 years, he and his wife leave finland 3 months in the winter to go travelling. he´d been practically eveywhere!
went to bed about 10pm.
