Arequipa is a beautiful city - we were there for two days and saw some wierd and wonderful sights. First was Juanita, The Ice Maiden. She was a 14 year old girl from the Inca times who was sacrificed to the Gods on the top of a mountain. She remained there until the 90´s when she was discovered fully intact and with no damage at all except for a dent in her skull from the blow that killed her. It was apparently a great honour to be the chosen sacrifice...
Next up was the monastery, which is actually a convent. Some nuns still live there but only in a small section - the rest is open to the public and has remained relatively unchanged in 400 years. It was a city all of it´s own really and was a really lovely place to see.
In the evening we went to an Irish bar and played pool (believe it or not this actually does seem to be typical of Peruvian culture!) This turned out to be an interesting evening when a fight broke out among the locals and glass was flying everywhere! It turned out well for us though as once they had all been thrown out the owners were so embarrassed they apologised and gave us free drinks. ;-)
