We have absolutely loved Sydney, but it's time to move on. We have pretty much experienced all you can in Sydney without living here. Shame the weathers not been to great to spend more time seeing the different beaches, but I am sure we will pass through again sometime soon.
We are staying in Kings Cross in Sydney and it's not as bad as it's made out to be! The Aussies we have met in Asia have all been 'oooh no you dont want to stay in Kings Cross', but fair enough we see many prostitutes, and a lot of winos, but thats mainly only every so often, and they are generally all gathered together.
Our new hostel as Richard said before is so much better than our last. It just depends on the room you stay in I suppose. If we were put in a smaller dorm and the price wasn't so high than the last would have been fantastic. With Chilli blue though, we got a huge envelope, with free drinks at various bars around the city, and free meals here and there. They had free nights out 3 times a week, free breakfast. None of this was advertised and we thought it was great. We got to know a few guys, and went out on Wednesday night for a hostel night out. They have a tab behind a bar so basically free drinks until it runs out. Great!! It didn't last too long, and with Richard and I rarely drinking anyways we did not need much, but still seemed to have staggered in at 3am. There was a South Korean girl who was out too, and she was amazed that people were dancing, and she said she has never ever danced in her life. So I had to get her up there!! It was fun, but the next day paid for it. We are just not used to drinking anymore.
The Sydney harbour bridge climb is just so ridiculously expensive, over $200. So we thought we would do it the cheap way! This was to climb up the southern pylon of the bridge. It's the only one open to the public and has a little exherbition. Once you reach the top, you are so high up and can see for miles. We didnt have the best day to climb as it was so windy and a little cloudy. I would have hated to have been doing the bridge walk, they all seemed to be holding on for dear life, although they were wired onto the rails.
The guy in our room is so funny, not in a humourous way, but really strange. He is travelling, he is in his late 30's, he doesnt seem to venture far from the hostel as everytime we go back, there he is. Apparently he has been to Australia 10hundred times, yet when i ask him about a place, he responds with, wheres that then? WHAT??? And he's always wondering around in his pants! EWWW
We went out for a meal on Friday night with Emily, The girl in our room. Shes from London, 26, very nice. She was in the middle of travelling around New Zealand but decided to come to Sydney for Mardi Gras, as she knows quite a few ppl who are in Sydney for it aswel. The meal was suppose to have been free with a voucher the hostel gave us! Instead they charge you high prices for drinks. We only bought a coke and it cost $4 each! But a meal and drink for $4 isn't bad, and it was actually a real nice meal.
Mardi Gras was awsome. And what a beautiful day for it! All day the sun was blazing, red hot. What people have been saying is to get a great spot you have to go and stand out there about 3!! It didnt start it nearly 8pm. No way were we going to do that, we had things to do. We bought a sim card for our phone, and forgot that we had to get the phone unlocked. So we asked a few places in kings cross and there answer was "only in chinatown" Chinatown is across the city, so we got the tube, and went to about 3 places before someone could actually do it. While in Chinatown we thought we could get a great Chinese, but was really dissapointed that it wasn't upto English Chinese. Oh well! :P
By the time we got down to Oxford street where Mardi Gras was it was 7pm, and by chance we got a great spot, only 2 people behind the barriers. We could see perfectly. The Parade started with Dykes on bikes. There were so many of them. Dressed up (or not dressed) on these huge big harleys. It was amazing. A great way to start. Then it was just getting better and better, and the crowd were just loving it. We were standing next to a guy who had been in the previous years, but had never watched it. He was loving it, had a big pink Aussie flag and was always dancing, and shouting to the parade and he got so many kisses and hugs from various ppl. Some floats were just so over the top and flamboyant, with 50 or so people behind marching and dancing, all choreographed. 'Fabulous darling!!'
We took it easy on Sunday, made a picnic and sat in the botanical gardens watching the birds and reading. Walked down to Mrs Macquaries chair, which is where the Governers wife used to sit and take in the view. Right opposite the harbour.
Syney just has a great feel to the place, and we will probably be back, but we will just end up saying that about everywhere at this rate.
