Rich and Martha's travels
Our last day in Bali :(. It's been really beautiful here, very peaceful, great weather, food and people and of course very cheap.
We made the most of our last full day yesterday and took a tour of the northern part of the island. We drove to a place where they do traditional Balinese dancing (which you can imagine rich loved) whihc was more like a pantomime really, lots of different costumes and a story to go with it.
From there we went to a silver smiths to see how the traditional jewellery is made and then to an art village. Here we saw students creating pictures, some of which take 4 months to finish!! We then carried on in the creative vein and went to watch the woodcarving, we looked at the processes involved in turning a lump of wood into a figure all by hand. The detail on some of this stuff is amazing. As I'm sure you can tell this part of Bali is very creative, there are stalls and shops selling an amazing array of handmade things, a lot of which goes to export. I could have bought a ton of things but gave in to only two!!
From there we headed to the volcano, it hasn't erupted since 1998 but to be honest was a bit disappointing as it was pretty misty and we couldn't see much. There were a load of street hawkers trying to sell tat and a restaurant that was selling overpriced food to a captive audience, as they sell the volcano as the hightlight of the trip it wasn't that brilliant!!
On from there we headed back to our village via the rice terraces which were really awesome to look at, it's amazing how they form them in the mountainside, the pictures will go online one day!!. Then we visited the holy spring temple where much to my amusement, rich had to wear a sarong to go in, he hated it and only under protest would he let me take a picture!! They had the biggest Koi I've ever seen in the ponds there.
So that's it, the first part of our trip over, we fly to NZ tonight and then we have to start getting up in the morning and actually do stuff as we have some tours booked already. Will mail from there when we get chance xx
