Theres a subtle warning ina certain travel guide about the tour companies operating in this part of the world. They are cheap but ¨quality does not come at this price¨. We shall bear this in mind the next time we decide to tak a three day 4x4 jeep tour across the Andes into Bolvia and the salt flats.
All began well, as we arrived at the Bolivian border in a snowy desert, just as a dust storm kicked up and destroyed one of our cameras, later that day as we reached 4500m altitude and began feling light headed, our jeep broke down and we had to push start it. Not really a problem just the once, but at altitude on an incline and sub'zero temperatures, the fourth time it happened the novelty started to wear off.
We made it to our first night stay, a simple stone hut like thing and wearing every itme of clothing we owned climbed into our sleeping bags under several blankets and slept, wondering what the next day had in store for us.
The next morning we awoke to good news, the driver had fixed the problem with engine, what he failed to mention was the fact he had the engine running most of the night and after a few hours driving we ran out of petrol, in the desert, in the cold, not even on a road. Eventually after ¨borrowing¨some petrol we made it to our second evenings accomodation, a lovely hotel made entirely of salt and feasted on llama steak.
Day three began at sunrise, a journey straight across the Bolivian salt flats, for much posing and artistic photography and everything was going well until...yep you guessed it no petrol again on the salt flats in the sun. More ¨borrowing¨petrol later we arrived in Uyuni!
Despite all this, we were travelling with an awesome group of people, who found the whole experience hilarious and has been one of the highlights of the trip so far. Just wait until you see the photos.... soon as I can!
