India and Nepal 2022
This has been a very varied final day of the tour. A spontaneous stop first thing was great as we saw the fishermen hauling in their morning's catch with young and old members of the community contributing to the effort. After that, a stop at the tsunami memorial where the Colombo to Galle train was washed away just over ten years ago. Life has returned pretty much to normal for those who live and work along this coastline, except those who lost loved ones of course. We also took a short boat journey on to the wetlands including a visit to 'Cinamon Island', where I had the unusual experience of a pedicure provided by hundreds of nibbling fish. I actually quite enjoyed it and was relieved to hear that these carp are not eaten by humans! Everything along the coast was destroyed including a turtle hatchery and sanctuary which we visited in its restored condition, with the help of financial contributions from many overseas. Tonight I am back in Negombo where I started by journey two weeks ago.
