Today we wanted to go to visit a famous Chinese bloke's mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze) but as tours are at set times we decided to leave this for tomorrow and head down the street towards all the markets and hawker stalls on Jalan Penang. We also had a look at the the Komptor complex which is the tallest building in the city. Georgetown is a bustling little place and I like it a lot. We stopped by a chocolate boutique where we got a little tasting tour of all their goods including a plethora of chocolate covered fruit, the dreaded durian amongst them (a really smelly fruit so bad it's not allowed on public transport etc!). It doesn't have a particularly nice taste but I definitely didn't think it was as bad as Howellsey thought last time he tried it! I think the fact it was covered in chocolate helped somewhat! After lunch we had some admin to do before heading out on the town. We had wanted to try out one of the many revolving restaurants we have seen in Asia as a bit of a treat and the sunset views of the city but unfortunately it is closed on Mondays! Oops! Still, it's not like it's hard to get good food on the street around here! We ended up having to find somewhere to shelter early in the evening in any case as a massive downpour sent people scurrying for shelters and the rats to vacate their homes in the sewers - nice! We then went to the Red Garden food court/night market. It was amazing, tonnes of hawker stalls and waiters to serve drinks separately. You just placed an order, sat down, and your meal would eventually find you. I had pork with rice and green veges along with the usual broth and some kind of salty yet sweet sauce - yum! Ian asked for oyster omelette (a speciality here) and even though he got a mussel omelette, it was still really good. He also had some more Assam laksa, again a speciality of the area. Full and happy we headed back to the hostel!
