I can't believe how long it's been since I wrote a blog! I will try to keep this brief, or I will be here all day...
We're now in Singapore, which is gorgeous and exciting but a tad expensive! We went on the Singapore Flyer yesterday (like the London eye), and enjoyed great views. There's a nice excitable vibe in Singapore at the moment, because they're getting ready to host the Grand Prix in a couple of weeks. Our hotel is in Little India, which is so colourful and lively in the evening - we spent our first night around there. Then alst night we went down to Boat Quay, which is quite posh and has amazing views over the river, with the skyscrapers in the background.
Before Singapore, we were in Borneo, which was so lovely and laid back! We went to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah for 2 nights, which wasn't really enough time to do much (unfortunately we wasted most of our only day by going to the disappointing and hard-to-get-to Sabah Museum), but the city was a nice place to relax (and shop) in anyway. The waterfront there was beautiful, so we got some great views of sunset.
After Sabah, we flew to Kuching in Sarawak for 5 nights. Although the main tourism season is pretty much over, there was still a nice atnosphere here, and we did some really cool activites. First of all we went kayaking for a day, which was just incredible! There were only 5 tourists, and two guides (who were so friendly), and no-one else on the river, so it was the most peaceful time we've had during our trip! We didn't take photos ourselves from the kayak (sensible decision), but the guides took over 300 (!) and delivered the CD of the photos to our hotel the next day, so I'll edit them and upload them at a later date! We also visited the Orang Utan sanctuary at feeding time, so we got to witness them crashing through the trees for their breakfast, right next to where we were stood. That was a really great experience.
The day after kayaking, we gave our aching arm muscles a break and gave our legs a work-out instead, as we went to Bako National Park for jungle trekking! We stayed the night, which was just fabulous. We went on a walk the first day (only a couple of hours....I didn't really feel up to doing any huge treks, so we just did some gentle ones, with lots of photo stops along the way!) There were lots of different routes of varying lengths. Then in the evening we went on a little stroll in the dark, which was a bit scary but fun. The next day we got up early to see the rainforest at the most exciting time, at dawn. The whole experience was better than I could've imagined, because we hardly saw anyone during our walks, so it really felt like we were exploring the rainforest on our own! We saw some amazing wildlife, including a giant mudskipper, a giant hermit crab, Proboscis monekys, macaques (who stole my toast in the morning, grrr), a wild pig (trying to steal BBQ food from a gorup of tourists), a viper, beautiful kingfishers......the list goes on! And I supported what felt like the entire rainforest mosquito population on my arms and legs! But our time in the jungle was definitely worth it, depsite the fact that my legs and arms now look like I've had the plague or something.
Right, off to stroll around Singapore some more now. We're having a designated relax here.....we've decided not to try and do much, so we're just wandering about, stopping for many coffee breaks along the way :-) the two Singaporean past times seem to be shopping and eating, so we're embracing the culture!
