Continuing on from yesterday's blog. Charlie has a dream of becoming a pilot. To support this dream and expose him to flight, we thought we would surprise him and the girls with a joy flight over Fraser Island. Initially our plan was to take the 4x4 over to Fraser Island and do a drive around, however this seemed more exciting and a better chance to see more of the 23km x 127km island.
We had the kids up early at 5:30am to get oranised and to the Hervey Bay airport by 6:30am. They had no idea what surprise was but I really think Charlie was on to it.
On the way and once the airport was in sight Charlie was beside himself, the girls were excited but nervous.
Our pilot for the day was a youg man called James. He was very polite and accommodating. We informed him about Charlies dream. Shortly after Charlie was co-pilot and sitting beside James at the controls. We were going up in a six seat Cesna 107.
Felicity looked nervous as we roared down the runway. The little Cesna slowly left the ground and took us high toward a beautiful and welcoming blue sky.
Looking back we had the birds eye view of Hervey Bay. You don't really notice the massive sand bars in the area and how shallow the water is from the ground. Looking foward the co-pilot was in his element.
We flew toward Fraser Island and James pointed out all the amazing things to see. This included Butterfly Lake, a shipwreack and whales. I didnt know that Fraser Island is the largest sand Island in the world. I also didn't know it is the only sand island in the world to have a rainforest growing on it.
After 15 minutes in the air Flick still looked nervous. Mackayla had settled into it and was enjoying the ride. Mandy and I were loving it. The sun was not long up, the sky was an amazing blue and the scenery was spectacular. The water was bright turquoise in colour.
On the way back James handed the controls to the co-pilot. This absolutely made Charlie's day. He was able to slowly bank right and left. He slowly pulled back on the controls to feel the front of the plane rise. It was awesome!
Unfortunately our half hour scenic flight was over all too soon. Back on the ground we headed to McDonalds for breakfast and a coffee. The girls loved it the flight but were happy to be back on the ground. Charlie described it as his best day ever. Mission accomplished!
