Ren and M's Excellent Adventure
After leaving the comfort of Uyuni......we got back to a local hostel to be greated by all travellers running around and a bit manic (very unlike the travellers we had met so far!) There had been a strike anounced following a ruccus with the local Mayor who refused to do anything about a local woman had been injured (or killed) by a tourist bus. We decided it was probably best to get straight out and had luckily booked on a bus to Potosi. We ran to get the bus which after doing a circuit of the town pulled over to pick us up. It was quite full. 4 other travellers and the rest drunk locals who wanted to discuss the more intricate details of Bolivian poverty....no hablar espanol! phew!
After the 5 hour bus ride had already taken 6 hours we started to realise the bus was coming to a stand still in the middle of nowhere at 1am. Believe it or not it had run out of petrol and a very vocal English bloke was shouting abuse at many of the Bolivians....we decided to alter our nationality and became Italian for the time being! Victor Meldrew continued with his tirade whilst trying to involve us and another American couple (Linden & Saint John -L&StJ).
After a couple of hours the conductor who had been sent off to get some diesel from somewhere returned and we carryed on one our merry way. L&StJ kindly asked us if we had arranged accommodation and as usual we hadn't so basically we all ended up tagging along together for the next week or so. Our relationship was trully based on eating VERY well...drinking StJ's Cocktails....he should be referred to as the cocktail Jedi! And discussing world politics into the early hours!
Potosi itself was a charming town, with good restuarants and the most amazing spectacal of the silver mine. After an afternoon of deliberation I decided I would risk life and limb to visit and go into them! It was really amazing ....... a climbing experince and next time they let the dynamite off I don't want to be underneath 45 metres of moutain! In the mountain they also worship the devil and give him alcohol (96%), cigarettes and coca leaves to appease him.....we did this too! He also has a HUGE willy!
