G'day all! Yet another restrospective addition to the journal. The last entry saw me in Hobart, and a helluava lot has happened since then. So much that yet again this is going to be yet another brief summary. After Hobart, I joined a tour from Melbourne to Adelaide, which turned out to be a Melbourne to Melbourne trip. Despite the mix up, the trip was great, thanks to the guys on the group, as well as some of the breath-taking scenery - the highlight had to be the all too short helicopter ride over the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road. The 3 day trip saw us camping out in the bush (albeit in sheltered accommodation), and it was great - the first night at the Ass' Ear, and the second in a town that consisted entirely of a hostel, a hotel, 3 houses, one shop, and a public telephone (that actually worked!). Day one was spent in the Grampians NP, and that night most of us drank way too much, and I finally figured the solution to a game that has been haunting me since a braai over 2 years ago! Days 2 and 3 were spent winding along the Great Ocean Rd, soaking up the amazing scenery, teetering on the edge of cliffs, all the while clicking away madly on our cameras!
After the travel agency organised a bus for me to get from Melbourne to Adelaide, I jumped on to a 3 day trip of Kangeroo Island. I have to say, the trip itself was average, but again the guys on the trip were great..... apart from an older American company who threatened to sue the tour company, which soured the end of the trip. On the island, we walked amongst sea lions, clambered amongst some Remarkable Rocks. A few hardy fools, myself included, decided to go sand boarding, despite some severe winds, and thus severe sand storms - needless to say, the boarding was futile, and was more effective as a hot exfoliation session.....
After the Kangeroo trip, I went to watch day 3 of the 2nd Ashes test, and I was camped i amongst the Barmy Army - a great experience that occassionally left my ears ringing. That same day, I boarded the Indian Pacific train towards Perth. The trip was awesome, and I recommend to every and anyone. I saw wild camels and huge Kangeroos along the way - as well as a great deal of nothingness, which in itself held its own charm. I deboarded at Kalgoorlie, and spent a couple days there waiting for a bus south to Esperance. The town is peculiar at best, and is home to a strange collection of miners from all over the world. When the bus finally came, it broke down half away along. Esperence is a great little town, with beautiful beaches and oceans, and some enticing national parks a sort while away.... I didn't have a car, so didn't visit them, but I'll be back! After Esperence was Albany, another fantastic little town, and the hostel was good fun as well! Went diving there in the sunken former HMAS Perth, which was great, great fun..... Rather than just a simple bus trip to Perth along the highway, I took a combined bus/train trip along the south west coast, and arrived in Perth on the 12th of Dec - stayed in two grotty hostels, and wandered around Perth - a beautiful, lovely, busy city that still has an air of relaxed comfort....
well, I warned you all it would be brief. I think if I had put in too much detail most of you, me included, would have begun to skim read!
