Well, today is offically the last day of our Peruvian Odyssey. Tomorrow morning we are both flying out - Damian home and me to Argentina and to try to get back into work mode for the conference next week. I'll have plenty of time at the airport - Damian's flight leaves at 7.30 am, 3 hrs before mine, so we're leaving ridiculously early and I'll have plenty of time for duty free window shopping.
The last bit of our trip was the Amazon. We were really only there for a day and a bit, which wasn't nearly enough time. But it was plenty to whet the apetite for a longer trip to Brazil or somewhere similar. We did manage to see a bit while we were there, despite the elephantine walking style of others within the group (and the fact that there were 14 of us, which doesn´t exactly help either). Birds were quite frustrating. The canopy was dense enough that we could only see things that were within about a 3 tree radius of us, so we could hear a lot, but not see much. We did see three types of macaws, two types of monkeys, a couple of snakes and lots of frogs. There were also two types of caymans and then on the last evening on our way to bed, Damian found a small, pink-toed tarantula (yes, it is real and we do have photos to prove that it has pink toes), which I was quite excited about. We would have been disappointed to miss out on tarantulas.
We spent most of the time in the jungle walking around, or on canoes, which was very relaxing. The weather was quite good - cool the first day and then warm the second day, but not the 100% humidity and 40 degrees which were possible. Unfortunately, I woke up yesterday with the same bug that has got just about everyone else on the trip. We've decided it must be some kind of viral gastro, as everyone has had it at various stages. The only two people who´ve escaped have been the ones drinking copious amounts of pisco, beer and wine, so perhaps the best defense is to pickle it. I was pretty miserable yesterday, which was not helped by a boat, bus, two planes and another bus on our way back to Lima, but at least I didn´t have to trek tens of kilometres.
We had our last trip dinner last night, which I managed to drag myself out of bed for. I came straight back to bed but Damian went out for a couple of drinks with the others and seemed to enjoy himself.
This morning we are doing a bit of wandering around Lima. We'd planned some sightseeing, but although I'm better than yesterday, I´m not back to 100%, so we´re taking it easy. A bit of last minute shopping, a bit of laundry and a walk will probably do us.
See you all soon.
