After our first night on the road it was time to hit the…. road! Heading south our next stop was Bunbury, a decent enough sized town with plenty of shops and things. The main attraction of the town is the Dolphin Experience, and since we love dolphins we had to go check it out. In the mornings, the dolphins from the area come in to the shore to be fed by lucky tourists. We arrived a bit late, in spite of waking up at seven or so, so we decided to check it out the next morning. Instead we popped to the tourist office for the low down on the town…
So the main attractions of the town are the big swamp called the Big Swamp, the hilltop lookout called the Hilltop Lookout, the lighthouse and the giants causeway like beach called Granite Rock or something (the beach is also known as Rocky Point). We took a stroll around the path in the swamp, some nice ducks and swans were swimming about (there is meant to be turtles too, very illusive ones). Then we drove up to the lookout and looked out, not much to see except the sea. Lastly we took in the rocky beach and it was weirdly similar to the Giants Causeway in formation, but just not as immense and not as well formed, you can see this in the photos I think.
The camping was still going well enough at this stage, although the cold had hit us late last night. We hadn't bothered bringing any blankets, or pillows so it was really cold but we managed ok. We decided, since it was hardly likely to get any warmer to buy a sleeping bag and use that as a blanket, we even found one for a tenner, the job!!!! We strolled around the shops for a while, had a nice coffee and a scone in a little café and then went to the library to get some free internets. That evening it was back to the camper and we had our first BBQ. Sadly, this wasn't going to be a good idea, not because of food poisoning or anything like that, just because it took fecking ages to cook everything. It was still good and tasty though and the ideal types of food to be eating on a camping adventure like this. My first blog about the camping may have sounded like it wasn't great, but I am really enjoying it so far. Its great to just throw everything in the back, sleep there, eat there and just head off wherever ya like. Obviously it has its drawbacks but the things we don't have in the camper are things we will no doubt be sick of having within a month of being home again. So there, I am happy to be camping in a refitted builders van from the 90's some time.
The next morning we were up with the dawn again. We boiled up some water for tea and brekkie and headed down to the dolphin place. When we got there it was just open at 8 and we were told the dolphins normally come in early but could be up to lunch time before they do, also none had come the day before. We went out to the viewing deck and off in the distance we could see a mother and calf swimming around. For the next hour or so we saw maybe two more dolphins out in the distance jumping about. Then a massive tanker ship came into port right beside us, not putting off the fish we were told. And that was it, we took a look at their little aquarium and museum type thing and hit the road. Our tickets can be reused two more times (we are in Bunbury again now a week later writing this but we aren't going back). Off along the coast now towards Cape Naturaliste and Geographe Bay…. they like putting E at the end of words here!!!
