Kate on Tour
Arrived in Siem Reap yesterday (26th Sept) and checked in to our guesthouse...a great place near the Old Market. We went for the $1 a night option...a raised wooden dorm room that is like a treehouse with big mosi nets and bamboo divides, it's brilliant...'Lord of the Flies Chic'!! Siem Reap has a very different feel to Pnom Penh, with new hotels catering for the tourist market springing up left, right and center. It feels wrong to have so many large, often western run, swanky hotels cashing in on Cambodia tourism opportunities when all around Siem Reap and Angkor you are surrounded by children desperate to sell you postcards and bracelets to make money for their family and cambodians being paid $25 for a months work waitressing at a tourist restaurant. 27th Sept After a morning sorting out my ticket to Luang Prebang in Laos (and randomly bumping in to Emma and Dave from Halong Bay boat trip!) we headed to Angkor Wat in a tuc tuc to catch the sunset. Unfortunately it was a bit cloudy but none the less an excellent experience. We hired some bikes with the plan to get up at 4.30am the following morning and cycle to Angkor Wat to catch the sun rise followed by a day of exploring the temples. The plan went a bit pear shaped as it was pouring with rain when our alarms went off so decided to cycle to Angkor later that morning (secretly relieved!). 28th Sept An amazing day spent exploring Angkor Wat, Bayon and Tah Prom before cycling back to our 'treehouse!' (bats flying above us as it was dusk...very 'Tomb Raider'!!) As it was Marielles birthday we all headed out for some food and an Angkor Beer! 29th Sept Felt sad to leave Cambodia as it is such a fascinating country, but at the same time was excited about heading to Laos which has been highly recommended by lots of people on route!...
