So ...Tayrona..
Described as a must see by enough people that we decided we needed to go. To get there you either do a huge trek through jungle, knee deep in mud climbing sheer rock faces etc or you get the boat straight to the beach. Since there had been a 12 hour thunderstorm with heavy rain the night before we left we elected to go for the boat option. This took about 90 mins and went straight to the beach of Cabo which is renowned as the nicest in Tayrona. I wasn't hugely impressed- the rainy season meant that the beach was filled with debris and the sea was a muddy green colour. In addition the toilets looked as though the cleaner had died many years before the only affordable sleeping was on hammocks and the food was all hugely deep fried. Plus it stunk of poo. We had a relax on the beach and a swim but it wasn't the kind of place we were fussed about staying - despite the expense of getting there. The night in hammocks was difficult and there were so many people packed so closely that if one person hit the person next to them and sent them swinging everyone in the row got woken up like dominoes. It was a shame after all the good stories but we later learnt that the reason it was so miserable was because it was rainy season- all those that believed it to be paradise probably went earlier in the year! So we have returned- covered in mozzie bites (faces no exception) to Taganga. Today we plan on catching the 12.30 bus back to Cartagena for a week-long Spanish and salsa course!!
