We had a bus booked from Georgetown to Kuala Lumpur at 12.30, it was a luxury bus and the seat were huge like business class chairs you get on a plane, mind was broken though and my air con kept dripping on me so unfortunately I drew the short straw. The bus was really busy and we got to Kuala Lumpur around 6.30/7. We weren't dropped off where we were told we would be so had to get the monorail and a taxi to our hostel. We stayed at The Reggae Mansion which is quite a busy hostel very popular with back packers, it cost us 50 ringitts a night for a 24 bed dorm which is about £7.50. The hostel had a cinema room and roof top bar which had a great view of the KL tower which lights up different colours throughout the night. The hostel included a free evening meal which was a choice of rice or noodles. It was really bad though and we ended up finding a Nandos afterwards which was amazing and really cheap too.
There was a really bad thunderstorm the next day so we got up late had lunch and got the free bus to the pavilion centre which is a massive shopping mall. We decided to go the cinema and we watched Spectre, we all really enjoyed the James Bond film and it cost about £2 to watch it. We spent the rest of the afternoon/Eve mooching around the mall and had a wonder through their Christmas grotto which was really nice and beautifully decorated. We had some dinner and the spent the evening chatting to fellow travellers in our dorm. Kuala Lumpur is obviously one of the main stopover points in the world so we met so many people here going to all sorts of different places.
We booked a city tour for the next day which was put on by the hostel, it was called the seven wonders of Kuala Lumpur and we visited....
National Muslim mosque - here we had to wear their robes and head scarfs before we went in. It was very beautiful inside and the grounds were very well kept and tidy.
Cricket pitch / Independence Day GB to MY - Malaysia use to be ruled by Great Britain and this site marks the date of Malaysia gaining its own independence of its country. Their Independence Day is the 31st August.
WW1 & 2 memorial site - we visited the monument and memorial site of all those that lost their lives in world war 1 and 2.
The palace - Malaysia has 9 royal families and each family lives in a different palace and is king and queen of their own state. Every 5 years they all swap and rule a different state. This palace was beautiful but the royals were not home but we did get to see the change of the guards at the gates.
Batu Caves - This site was really impressive it took us about 40 minutes to get up the steps and back down to get inside the cave. There were wild monkeys at the top that pulled on people's backpacks and stole their food.
Selangor pewter / tin factory - we visited the factory where Tin is made into every day items. We got to watch each step and learnt about the history of the factory.
Twin towers - our last stop was at the twin towers. We just came to take pictures of it on this day. We had to walk quite a way in order to fit them into a picture.
We really enjoyed our city sites tour and spent the evening on the roof top bar of our hostel, we were able to have dinner up there too and could see the KL tour all lit up.
The next day we didn't do too much as we were a little worse for wear from the night before. We did mange to make it out in the afternoon and got tickets to climb up the twin towers which was well worth doing and was very impressive. We also visited another mall afterwards where we could buy fake designer bags at very little cost. I got 3 for £10! my own had fallen apart and needed binning so I had a good excuse. Afterwards we went to a sky bar for drinks. It was set out on a helipad and we were able to watch the sunset and see the city all lit up at night. We spent the rest of the evening back at hostel and had an early night.
On our fourth day here we booked a tour to the elephant sanctuary. We were picked up quite early and the bus started going round and stopping at the sites we had previously done two days before. The hostel hadn't informed us that it was a city site tour in the morning and that the sanctuary was in the afternoon. It was still good although we didn't fancy climbing the Batu stairs again up to the caves. We were able to skip a few things and visited a deer park on the way to the sanctuary. We stopped for lunch and headed to the elephant place. We got to watch a show about the sanctuary that look after and rescue the elephants first and then we got to go and see the elephants and feed them. We could give them sugar cane sticks or bananas they were really tame and we got to take some lovely pictures of them. After this some more elephants came out and were introduced one a time and we were told a little about each one. Afterwards we could go up again and feed them fruit. You were also allowed to go with them down to the river to help bathe them but unfortunately it was raining and the river was too high and unsafe to do this part.
The sanctuary was about an hour from Kuala Lumpur, we spent our last evening at TGI Fridays and we did properly feast so that we could use up all our last few Malaysian ringitts as our currency would change again for Singapore.
We've decided against another 5 hour bus journey and saw that we could fly for the same price and it only take 1 hour so we booked any early flight to make sure we didn't loose a whole day travelling.
