After the Temple of Heaven, Shirley walked us through one of Beijing's largest Hutongs to a local restaurant where we had hand made dumplings. This was a 'proper' local eating house, as opposed to a tourist restaurant and the dumplings were gorgeous, although I don't think I'd have wanted to visit the kitchen!
After tea we went to The Red Theatre to watch a show called 'The Legend of Kung Fu'.
A high energy show that told the story of a small boy called 'Chung Lei' who was left at a Shaolin Monk temple by his mother, to learn the ways of the world and to become a man.
The story was pretty average, (as you would expect) and after many years of study, discipline and having overcome the temptation of the flesh he mastered the way of Kung Fu and Chung Lei eventually became the Abbot of the monastery - the teacher.
What was not in any way average, was the Kung Fu! These guys were able to jump from the floor as if they were on a trampoline and even Bruce Lee would've been proud of the choreography. All this was rounded off with teams of monks snapping lead bars on their heads, concrete slabs were smashed on their stomachs whilst laying on a bed of nails and one guy was lifted in to the air by spears, wedged pointy end in to his throat and stomach!
An amazing and colorful show, I'm glad we saw it.
