Friday, Feburary 4, 2011: We took our first overnight train from Cologne to Munich. Our trip went from Maastricht>Heerlen>Duren>Koln>Munich>Salzburg. We left Maastricht around 9:00pm and arrived in Salzburg at 9:20am. We had a close call because our Duren train left 10 minutes before it was supposed to, which meant we missed it. A train got redirected to Duren>Koln; however, it would arrive at 10:45pm and our overnight train left at 10:46pm (giving us a minute to make our next train). There was definate panic! I took Melissas backpack(now with 2 huge backpacks) and Allie took Phong's backpack, they then ran ahead to get the train to wait for us.....we made it! The overnight train car was very hot; however, it was nice to get to sleep. We also had a rando in our car whose name was "rule" (we nicknamed him "goo").
When we arrived in Salzburg, we ran to the Pandora Sound of Music tour booth so we could buy our tickets and make the 9:30 tour. The theme of our trip was being last minute to everything and having to run! It made it a very adventurous and fun trip!
The S.O.M. tour was amazing. We got to see sights from the movie, where the actors stayed in Salzburg, where Maria got married, and some of the most beautiful places. Our tour guide was so funny (crude at times, but funny). After the tour, we walked around Salzburg and enjoyed the quiet, little town. We saw the huge fortress, several gardens (that had no flowers because it is winter), and even went to a beer garden to eat. I had the most amazing chocolate cake, they are known for their famous Sachertorte cake. Our hostel, the YoHo, was a excellent first hostel experience. The next morning it was off to Fussen, Germany!
