It was then goodbye to Malawi and onto Zambia. So stoked we weren´t one of the brits as they had to pay $150US for there visa, instead of the $50US we had to (think zambia is definatly milking the zim situation). Did another illegal money change at some guys house in Chipata (town across the boarder).
Then it was probably the worst drive we´ve had to get to South Luangwa National Park, the road was extremely bumby and it was so hot bouncing along that road and was a relief when we finally arrived at the campsite.
This was our favourite campsite, it was a beautiful spot across the river from the South Luangwa game park. When we arrived the owner told us to be careful at night as elephants and hippos may come through. And sure enough, that night when we were cooking dinner a heard of elephants came through, it was funny seeing these massive animals drinking the water out of the swimming pool. Then at about midnight we woke up to hear elephants eating the trees by the toliets, and then we experienced the most amazing moment as we watched this massive elephant walk straight to our tent and stop within hands reach to each the branches above our head, incredible!!
The next morning we were up early for a game drive through the park. Really beautiful park and very different landscape to the other parks we´d been through. Saw lots of animals and finally got that up close shot of a male lion. After our game drive we arrived back to the campsite to an awesome brunch that tash and george had cooked (eggs, bacon, sausages). Then spent the rest of the day relaxing, playing cards, and getting a bit of washing done before our night game drive.
Night game drive was unreal. The first couple of hours was quite slow and we didn´t see much but in the last hour we got a few treats. We just missed seeing a pack of lions kill a buffalo by about 5 mins, but got to see and hear about 7 lions ripping into this buffalo, mark got some good video footage. Then just after that we got to see a male lion chase a leopard (who had come to check out the buffalo kill) up a tree, and we got to park just underneath the tree and get up close to the leopard, wow!
Tash had arranged a traditional meal for us when we got back, then it was off to bed. We got the video camera out ready for the elephants to come through but unfortunatly didn´t. Instead we woke up to the sound of a hippo munching on the grass about a metre from our tent. Very funny thing to see up close, the size of a hippos mouth eating grass like a cow.
Absolutly loved south luangwa game park and we were very sad to leave.
