After reloading the funds in Dar essalam, we caught the afternoon ferry headed for Zanzibar island. The entertainment on the ferry crossing was movies from the 80´s, which you wouldnt say were for family viewing. After getting there and and dropping our gear at the hotel, we got taken on a spice tour through the island. It started off with a local style lunch at the tour guides friends house on the living room floor, but was really good. Then we took a short drive to the spice farms where we samples lots of different spices like ginger, pepper, lemon grass, vanilla, etc. At the end of the spice tour they gave us a fruit tasting session, where they produces heaps of fruit we had never seen before.
That night we headed into stone town to sample the local market foods, and ended endulging in more than a few zanzibar pizzas, which are a thin pastry base filled with egg, meat, onion, herbs, and tastes mint.
The following day we got on a Prison island tour for 25 us dollars, where we jumped on a local boat and cruised over to another island where we jumped out on to white white sand and cristal clear waters. The isalnd that used to be a prison is now like resort, with a sanctuary for giant tortuses. We then drove out to the reef for bit of snorkelling, saw schools of squid, a sting ray and heaps more which was really good except that G slashed her foot on some coral which looked a bit nasty. After G got her foot bandaged up we indulged in more fruit for lunch and made our way back to zanzibar island. That afternoon we brought a few beer for the bus trip to our accomodation on the other side of the island called sunset bugalows. We arrived after afew good games of car cricket and checked in to our mint rooms on the beach. We had a coupl of days chilling on the beach, swimming. The beach was really amazing, so clear, and such white sand, could easily of stayed there for longer. I did a dive refresher course, and got out for a dive on an off shore reef at about 16m.
The beach at one end was lined with art markets, mainly paintings and carved wood. We bartered with one guy for a painting and ended up trading my wallet as part payment for a large painting we liked. Most nights we spent having a few drinks with the truck and relaxing.
On the 8th after having a few good days at the beach it was time to leave, we had an early start, and got a few hours in stone town before we left on the ferry. The seas were a bit rougher than on the way over and quite a few people ended up chucking up all over the boat, so we were pretty happy to get off it and away from the puke. Back on the main land we caught another dodgy packed ferry accross the harbour with the locals to catch a convoy of tazis to the camp site. Played a bit of pool volley ball and sampled a few of the inhouse specialties, slushies with some kind of local spirit in them.
