After 4 weeks in turkey it was time to make our way back across europe to Croatia. We were told that if we got the local bus driver in Edrine (top of turkey) to drop us off at a petrol station near the Bulgaria boarder we could get on a bus heading from Istanbul to Sofia. Unfortunatly the bus driver didnt understand us and dropped us off right on the boarder where we waited with the guards until a bus came through. One of the guards waved a bus down for us that said it was going to Sofia, but as it turned out it was only going past Sofia so we got dropped off on the outskirts of the city at 1am in the morning (luckily there was a taxi nearby!).
Found a hostel (Art Hostel) to stop for the night, then spent the next day checking out Sofia. Turned out to be a really nice city with lots of parks and trees. Got lost in translation a couple of times (they nod their head of no and shake there head for yes!). One friendly local noticed we were tourists and got chatting to us, as he said he hadn't had a chance to practise his english for a couple of years. Loved the cheap beers and pizza (0.75 euro cents each).
Then it was onto our first night train experience to Belgrade.
