Preparing for Uganda
Royal Leamington Spa, UK
So it's just 30 days before we fly out to Uganda! Eeek!
It's funny how when we are ill, we have far more time to think about things.
My journey for Uganda began back in in 2014. I had seen NOTDEC at church with their mission display and what they do out in Uganda. I had spoken to lovely lady called Janet. To be honest I listened, took some leaflets away and thought nothing of it.
Fastforward to March 2015. I remember being at work and just felt that there was a higher purpose for my life - the question I kept asking myself was 'surely there is more to life?'. I researched places like Cambodia, Bolivia and Indonesia thinking that was where I wanted to go, though God had other plans. I found myself reminded of Janet from NOTDEC, so I called her on my lunch and said 'I'd like to go to Uganda for 3 months or so, do you have anything like that to offer?' at which point Janet laughed with delight and said 'well, not 3 months, but we are going in January for 3 weeks, and we have one space left'. Without another thought, I said to Janet, 'please put me down, i'm in'...and here I am 30 days away.
Now for those of you who know me very well, will know I pray and have faith in Christ A LOT, whatever he does, I laugh (and sometimes cry) but take on with a smile, because I know he has a great plan for me - whatever that journey entails.
My Uganda trip to work with NOTDEC, would not be possible, if it wasn't for the kindness and generosity of my family, friends and Church family. I genuinely worried how I would make this trip happen, but I was taken back completely, when I raised above and beyond my target of £1300, in just 5.5 days! Right then I knew, God was saying 'see I told you, you have nothing to worry about, and you are definitely going to Uganda, I have work for you to do' :).
I'm not sure what this next journey will hold for me but what I do know is, more than what I will teach the children out there, they will teach me - that is the best part of travelling, you learn and gain knowledge but above all, learn a new way of how other people live.
Our trip begins 4th January where we will fly to Nairobi and then onto Entebbe. We will reach Kasese 5th/6th January and then begin our first day on 7th January at the orphanage. I can't wait to meet the children!!!
There is also another special part of this trip that I haven't mentioned yet, and that is my trip to Kampala and Jinja. My mum and grandparents were born in Uganda. Having lost my grandmother in August, this trips means a lot more for me and holds a dear place in my heart.
My plan is to leave Kasese 22nd January, the day will be spent doing an approx 7-8 hours drive to Kampala. I'll then be staying with some friends my aunt introduced me to. On Monday 25th January I will head to Jinja to my mothers birthplace and see where she grew up.
I've met some lovely people who I can't wait to share this journey with and they are Janet and Anthony Johnston, Amanda and Kay.
Thank you all for making this happen, I couldnt have done it without you!
Thanks for reading and keep posted for more blogs
