Richard & Michelle Hamilton's Travels
When we disembarked in Singapore I had a message from our good friend at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, encouraging me to visit them around lunchtime. I had already arranged a session to visit Gettinge lab, which also was arranged at short notice over the weekend. Both visits were interesting. I was impressed with the theatre building system, but was particularly taken with its application to ICU scenarios. It was useful seeing these spaces fully equipped with current gear, and understand the thinking behind the designs and layouts. Tan Tock Seng was a major revelation. The work they have developed toe integrate Lean Thinking continuous improvement with Design Thinking 3P based approaches was cutting edge in hospitals. The success they are achieving is being well supported by senior leadership and central government. They have a major new build happening which will house their new innovation and medical education facilities, alongside a new Infectious Diseases Unit. The 3P work has been published in a new book, which I was gifted one of a very limited run. I came away very motivated and inspired, with a fresh commitment to bringing Lean and Design Thinking together to develop processes and infrastructure in harmony with each other. Between the two visits Michelle and I made a brief visit to Orchard Rd to reacquaint ourselves after many years away. We were too early for the shops which don't open until 10.30am. In the afternoon after Tan Tock Seng tour, we visited the Bay Mariner Gardens. This has been on my list to do since seeing them being developed a few years ago when we were last in Singapore. What a stunning place to visit. As some of the photos show the effort undertaken to complete the two domes we visited was nothing short of amazing. The planting and the sculptures were hard to believe for such a new facility. The best part after so much walking was the cooling air of both enclosures. The Skywalk was short but impressive as well. Recommend the gardens to anyone visiting Singapore. We returned to the airport and found a room for a few hours sleep - which was desperately need by then. Boarded the Singapore Airlines flight to Milan at 11pm. Seats near the back. Very constricting for me as knees hitting the chair in front made worse by this person putting his chair right back. Limited sleep had on that flight!
