For today we booked a tour of the canals. Bangkok's version to Venice!! We had been advised to get a taxi from the hotel no later than 9.15am to be at the docks by 10.00 to catch the boat. Well we started off at 9.05am and I was sure we weren't going to make it, but we got there with 5 minutes to spare. Once at the tour office there was probably no need to panic because there was no boat waiting for us! We walked to the canal with a tour guide through the back streets of China town to a dock. While waiting for our boat to arrive we were able to look on a 300 year old Chinese temple. So the long boat pulled up and there was just Rob myself & the guide. So for 2 hours we chugged around the canals. A good way to see a little of the rural life close to the city.
After the tour we thought we would walk into China Town only to be stopped again to be told the shops were shut due to new year celebrations & would be open at 6PM. Again I'm not sure if it was true, but anyway off we went again in a Tuk tuk to the same Temple as yesterday!! So we decided to tackle MBK. One of the massive bangkok shopping centres. Not with any real plans of what to buy we looked at a few products and found it to be only about 10-20% cheaper than home. So we had a coffee and decided to walk home using google maps as our guide taking us via some interesting paths & walk ways it took us nearly an hour. Back at the hotel we headed for a swim to cool off and a rest.
In the evening we went up to the bar on the 23rd floor to enjoy a cocktail and the view, then caught a taxi into China town for tea. Had nice pork & rice cooked on the street, walked around before heading back to the hotel. So after 2 days in Bangkok we had only spent money on food & transport.
