We're currently in Damascus and almost finished our trip through Syria. It's been a little while since a blog update so here's a very brief summary of what we've been doing here and it really is a fantastic place to visit...
Our first stop in Syria was Aleppo. After recovering from the initial assault to the senses of chaotic traffic, dust & heat we were glad to have included Syria as part of our trip. The people here are the most friendly and hospitable people of any country we've visited so far and really do make you feel very welcome in their country.
The food is also some of the best and cheapest we've had - kebabs, pides, felafel....the local dish in Aleppo is the fuul - which is a thin (almost hommus like) paste with oil, beans, paprika, cumin, garlic eaten with pita bread -its good and more importantly we survived it!
Hama is known for its norias or water wheels but unfortunetly the river is now just series of stagnant pools. It is also known for its roasted charcoal chickens. We explored the areas outside Aleppo and Hama with so much to see...
Syria has a tea drinking, deeply religious culture with a very strong focus on families which are extremely large!
So its ma'a salaama for now and we'll update photos from Palmyra and Damascus in the next week.
