Kalimera!
I think I possibly had the best coffee I have ever had this morning in a small café just around the corner from the Athenian acropolis. I must say it felt rather like a dream to be sitting in Athens at 9 o'clock this morning drinking coffee while the acropolis loomed above! I can't quite believe I am here! So, after a much-needed caffeine hit l explored the acropolis museum, which is absolutely fantastic, both from a tourist point of view but also from a curatorship point of view. The museum is built over an ancient site and much of the ground floor is glass so that you can see this other world below. It's fabulous; if you don't like heights. I have to say I was oblivious to the fact that the floor was see through until someone told me to look down, upon which point I almost had a heart attack! The artefacts inside were mind-blowing, particularly the forest of korai (statues of maidens dedicated at temples) of which I have always found so interesting. I loved the bone needles because they are such a profound symbol of domesticity and everyday life but at the same time were so beautifully delicate.
I am finding shops and stalls here quite amusing. We passed a stall on our way to the acropolis this afternoon, which had a drinks fridge the same as any other similar establishment. Except that among the soft drink and water there was the option of vodka as well as other alcohol beverages. Heineken anyone?
P.S lots of olives, yoghurt and feta have been consumed already. I really think this country has the right idea about food!
