Langkawi, a beach island, SUPER HOT and best of all pretty damn quiet. After a three hour boat journey from Penang (watching the 'Ahem' masterful 'Step Up 3') we took a taxi to the backpackers area and found the cheapest and nearest hotel we could find. To be honest, it could have cost and arm and a leg as when you're carrying (almost) 20kg backpacks in 35◦C heat, you lose the will to live. Its peak season so we were a little nervous but found a beach bungalow (even the creepy crawlies left us alone). Pantai Cenang beach has silky soft sand, warm blue waters and little to no tourists and beach sellers. Being close to the equator the sun stays out much longer than the previous countries we've visited. However, the gentle breeze is very deceptive at masking the high temperatures and you'll burn as we did, even with factor 30 on. Not bad after four months in the sun. We had to keep our wits about us when we were swimming as the jelly fish had a habit of creeping up on us. Resulting in two burnt lobsters (aka us) running from the sea, screaming like little girls. The area is a beach town with plenty of food choices. We indulged in Mexican, Indian, & Malay with varying results. The strip is full of tourist shops but in between is a chilled reggae beach bar called 'Babylon', a great place to grab a cheeky cocktail and listen to the live reggae band (that had a playlist beyond Bob Marley). One of the highlights was probably the worst fire shows in history due to the wasted, doped up fire performer and his hilarious tranny sidekick. You had to keep one eye on the performers at all times as we could have been burnt for another reason. They even set their petrol refill bucket on fire! We discovered our competitive edge over a few card games and jugs of beer at 'Debbie's Irish Bar'. It got a little heated like the fire show. Langkawi does exactly what it says on the tin, a great beach town but it's time to head back to the mainland.
