Hello all!
Jo and i are currently in Byron Bay living the true aussie surf lifestyle. Before i go into that i'll fill you in on the last few weeks.
Our relationship with newcastle was complicated. on the one hand it rained like it was monsoon season the whole time we were there and there is literally NOTHING to do when its raining and its a bit of a s*** hole of a place. But on the other we stayed in a lovely hostel and met loads of cool people to hang out with while we were flooded in. AND they had the lion king on video, so it wasnt all bad. It must have liked us tho cos it wouldn't let us leave!! we were due to leave for port stephens on the saturday but the place we were supposed to be staying called up and said the whole place was flooded so we couldnt come! then when we eventually got on the bus on sunday a bloody wheel came of as we were driving so we were stuck by the side of the road (still in newcastle) for a further 3 hours!
However, we DID eventually make it to port stephens which consists of Nelson's bay and Shoal Bay. The hostel we stayed in was again great, we slept in huts and there was nature all around, they even had a pet kangaroo!! Sweeeeet! there were snakes and lizards and kookaburras and possums etc etc etc. And a loverly beach. all very quaint, only somewhat tainted by some doctor drama (for me of course), im telling you small town Oz is NOT where you want to get into medical strife. But all was sorted out and then MALCOLM came!
So the rest of our time was spent in Malcolm's friend (and now ours too) Jez's beach house in Shoal Bay. The best thing of all was that JO AND I GOT OUR OWN ROOMS!!!!! im not sure you will all appreciate the amazingness of this but we have been sharing a room for 5 whole months so a week of our own space was indescribable. We could have as big a clothes explosion as we wanted! So it was Malcolm, Vite (his girlfriend), Jez, Jo and I as one big happy family for a week. And what a week it was! we ate A LOT and relaxed in the garden, went for walks along the beach, invented and played "volleyflop" at sunset (we didnt have volleyball so had to improvise with a flip flop), climbed mountains, went kayaking in the sea, saw whales and had the most amazing dolphon related experience of my life!! we were on a boat looking for whales and about 20 dolphins came up to us and started playing around in the bow wave the boat was making, they were jumping out and smiling at us all! I was extremely close to jumping in to try and hug one, but would have probably been killed by the boat running me over so its probably better that i didnt!
We were very sad to leave but all good things must come to an end so we all went our separate ways which brought jo and i to Byron Bay! It is an awesome place, quite a typical aussie surf town, what i thought all of australia was going to be before i came actaully! We're staying in what appears to be some crazy hippie commune! People sleep in teepees, tents and old buses! its great tho, meeting lots of interesting people, definitely a place where it would be easy to stay and forget the rest of the world exists! we've only been here 2 days but have already settled in.
After living in Bondi for 5 months without surfing once we decided to rectify the situation and had a surf lesson yesterday. it was awesome! i remembered how much i loved it! Jo was very scared but did really well standing up and everything!! our intructor was a legend! a real old surfer hippie type with all the aussie surf lingo finely tuned. So i think we've fallen in love with it and will be doing it a lot more from now on now we've mastered the basics. Watch out for us in the next roxy pros! haha!
So thats it so far, our adventure has really begun and we're loving it, aside from having to padlock our wallets so we dont buy ANYTHING EVER AGAIN cos all we can afford is food! and it would be impossible to fit anything else in our bags!
Hope you are all doing well at home or wherever you are, we miss you all lots and lots and lots. Will send another update soon! x x x
