Well heres the first New Zealand blog. Christchurch, the largest city in the south Island (with 330,000 people) situated on the East coast within the Canterbury plains. It is known as the English City and quite often described as more English than England. That could possibly be true, its very quaint, pretty and you can go punting on the River Avon. Well its not so much a river but more of a stream but very nice none the less. All the streets are named such as Gloucester, Manchester, Hereford, Worcester...you get the idea. Anyway, 2 nights here was enough to see the small city and it was a very good starting point for the NZ tour. Christchurch is also pretty famous for its cathedral so weve thrown a picture in the blogs for that. Although whilst there it was the Arts festival month so theres a giant eyeball in front of the cathedral!!??.
Also look out for the little house in the pics. There was a guy living in this house all day everyday for the whole month...for the Arts festival and everyday hed move it to another spot. was very funny, hed just sit there drinking a nice pot of tea and play jingles on his mini piano. Art is sometimes aimed at getting peoples attention and this worked, Kids would pass him little written notes in and hed offer tea and cake.
Whilst there we also took a gondola ride from the Heathcote valley just outside Christchurch which overlooked the city and also over Banks Peninsula.
Probably sounds a bit quiet there. Well it was really, apart from when Rachel laughed out loud at the waitress voice in the Cafe. It triggered a prolonged giggling session between us that ended up with us having to leave for fear of spitting coffee out and being evicted.
Anyway the city had a nice feel to it and we immediately felt comfortable. A bit of a home from home.
