Today Chris and I finally arrived in Stockholm after months of planning and a very hectic and long (chris says reasonable) flight - We didn't sleep much and after 10hours, had to sprit through the Zurich airport in order to make it to our connecting flight on to Stockholm! Amazingly Swiss Air managed to get our luggage across in the 30mins we had to change planes!!
After settling into the hotel and a quick power nap we headed off to Stockholm Central (the hotel is a few kms north of the city) and in particular Gamla Stan - the old medieval city. The old town is BEAUTIFUL with lovely cobbled alleyways between attractive old buildings. We wandered along all the streets just absorbing the atmosphere and looking in shops and gawping at the crazy food prices!
We stumbled upon a stunning old cathedral! Which really was magnificent from the outside! However we were completely blown away when we went inside! Hundreds of paintings, 2 huge organs - one of which was gold - and cherub faces all over the arching ceilings!! There was gold plating all over the place! I don't think either of us have ever seen anything like that church before!!
The best things about just wandering around without any definite plan is that you find such unexpected things like the full swedish orchestra playing outside the Svenska Academien where a Noble Laureate photo exhibition was on display! We also discovered 2 underground pubs (literally), the royal palace with its guards and the smallest alley in Europe(1m wide)!
We have found the Swedes to be really lovely people: happy, active and super stylish! Unfortunately communicating with them can be a bit difficult - which we found out when we were thoroughly lost in central Stockholm trying to find our bus stop on our way home this evening!
PS have a look at some photos from Stockholm Day 1! Captions will be added soon...
Love Rach & Chris
