Rachel's Travels...
Arrived in Dunedin today from Queenstown. Scenery wasn't as spectacular on the way here as it has been in other places. But in a place called Clyde we did see New Zealand's largest concrete dam that took 20 years (it was only supposed to take 4) to build. The stupid thing is that they built in directly ontop of a fault line - I wouldn't want to be living in Clyde when the next big earthquake hits!
Am staying in On Top backpackers which is ok. In the afternoon Kiwi Bus took some of us to the Otago pennisular to see some yellow eyed penguins. We were driven around in these really cool 8 wheel drive Argo's. They were fun! First we saw some seals. We were able to get up really close to them. There were also a couple of seal pups which were really cute.
Then we went to see penguins. I could see loads of penguin tracks on the beach below. The yellow eyed penguins were nesting in the bushes above the beach and were quite hard to spot. We couldn't go up the the nests, and had to view them from a watching platform. But I saw one really clearly through binnoculars - it was ace! I could also see it without the binnoculars, just not as clearly. I also got to see a really cute blue penguin - it was so tiny and sweet. It was nesting in a corner behing the viewing platform - I could really clearing as it was so close through a crack in the wood pannel, but I couldn't get a photo because the crack wasn't big enough.
