As Tuy Hoa seems very quiet it left us with little to do so we just hung around in the morning waiting for out next train in an AC carriage to Danang.
After a really difficult walk about 3 miles in the mid-day heat with our rucksacks we boarded the train. It was a little more expensive than the coach option but we had far more room, and access to the toilet and food whenever required, priceless!
Unfortunately the train didn't arrive into Danang until 10.30 pm which was always going to be difficult as we didn't have a reservation anywhere. As you can imagine after 9 hours on the train we were pretty tired and on approach looked through the guide book and found a place which sounded basic but within our budget. Usually we walk from train stations but as it was late we decided to get a taxi. We asked for the hotel and he said "That hotel has shut down, I will take you to another", well that is a classic line for a sca/m. The taxi driver says the place you want is closed, then gets commission from another place he takes you to. We very rudely told him we weren't having any of the scam and found a couple of motorbike taxis who would take us on the condition that if they didn't take us the right place they weren't getting paid.
The bikes pulled up to a pile of rubble and announced this was the hotel, needless to say we jumped off and started walking refusing to pay. It was dark, in an unknown city, all looking rather seedy. The driver shouted "check the address" over and over so we got out the book and it turns out they were right, the pile of rubble was infact our hotel. Oh dear.
Getting very, very stressed, it was now 11.30 pm and all but a few placed were open. With the motorbike drivers in toe as they wouldn't leave us, "I'll take you to my hotel, very cheap, cheap price for you, very expensive here, etc, etc, etc", we went looking at hotels. The first we're sure was a brothel, a "massage" parlour cum hotel, with young skimpy dressed girls showing you around, and guys hanging in corridors, as if waiting for their turn, needless to say we didn't stay there. A few doors down we avoided the rats at the entrance and stay in a ridiculously overpriced (twice our budget), grotty room. It was complete with staff who didn't care, and stains on the walls, only one night! Think we'll be leaving Danang in the morning.
