As the Ko Phangan port was a few miles from the main "party" town we wrestled with the touts and boarded a share taxi.
The Rough guide, or Gospel, said there was a nice spot to stay out on a peninsular by the lighthouse so we headed there. Small bungalows were said to be cheap and reasonably priced. Unfortunately most places looked closed and very weathered, stuck on a peninsular the only direction is back where you came from, by this time we were exhausted, hungry and short of water, "character building". There are some good photos of Rachael! Steve would have been proud!
Everywhere we looked rooms were £10 - £20 a night far too much on our budget but a decent Dutch guy who owned some expensive accommodation told us of a much cheaper spot owned by Russian. We managed to find "The Secret Garden", buried in dense woodland, the bungalows were OK, the five hungry ant colonies were going to be a hindrance but the views were amazing! £5 a night it was snapped-up.
We headed down to the beach for the build up to the Full Moon party in three nights time. It was buzzing, full of people, fire shows and cheap drinks! After a 20 hour to get here, we were pretty exhausted so just had a few drinks on the beach before retiring to our bug infested hut for the night.
