Coober Pedy, South Australia
It's taken us ten days to get to Coober Pedy and we are so glad to finally see some warmth.
Our first stop was Mildura where we caught up with Caz's Girlfirend Janine and her family. Shane her husband is a wine maker at a local vinyard and has the best home made wine and olive oil. We left with a dozen. Wine off course.
Our next stop was Broken Hill but the kids needed a play at Wentworth Sand Hills on the way. Yeh Ok, Caz and I enjoyed the sand hills too.
We stayed at the local Caravan park which was OK. We usued this as our base for a couple days and off to Silverton we went. There was some amazing Art Garleries, and we went down day dream mine which was well worth it. The area was used for the Mad max movies and the Silverton pub has been used in over 12 movies and commercials. They simply change the sign. Chinese dinner was Natasha's wish for her birthday.
Back on the raod heading for Port Augusta. We stayed just outside Port Augusta at this great campsite which was mentioned to us by a traveller we met at our toliet stop. We are finding that recomendations from other travelers are worth the change in our plans, nit that we have any.
Met some great people at the camp site and the wine came in handy aound the camp fire. This was a good place to start the kids used to walking. We treked two great places, Alligator Gorge and the Living sculptures. There was also a fauna park at the Living sculptures, but after walking for five minutes and seeing more irrigation pipes on the surface than a bunnings store, we decided to head to camp.
We were starting to get in a routine in packing up. The kids have been a great help. Nexst stop was the Flinders Rangers. This time is was off to the Woolshed for Jaime's 10th birthday. We couldn't convince her to eat kangaroo meat. Jaime was surpirsed when the onwer of the camp ground came out with a birthday cake. We did two walks. Wangara falls and Wilpena sound. The kids were great. In the aftrenoon we tested Greg's 4WD abilities through some gorges and dirt tracks. We survived.
Now the fun was going to begin. We decided to head for Coober Pedy via the Oonadata track. What a ride but well worth it and recomend it to anyone. We should also mention that we would never do it again. By the time we reached Coward Springs for a well earned spa in the middle of nowwhere, the trailer plug had disinegrated, as did our external tap and there was more dust in the van and car than what was on the track itself. We met a great guy who greg named Sean Connery because not only was he was from Scotland but he was trying to repair his flat tyre with some great gadgets. Greg was in his element at every camp site, view everyones toyes and set ups.
We had an early start the next morning, back on the oonadatta. It's amazing what gaffa tape can do. this was a much smother drive although heary at some time when the road become soft.
We're glad we stopped her. The kids have had a ball. They loved the underground homes but most important, we went shopping for a sovenior and they quickly realised that if they talked to the shop owners, they would get free opals. They definate;ly milked it.
After 10 days, we can say that the setting up and packing up has not been a chore. The kids are becoming more accustomed to travelling. No longer do we hop in the car with the words, "I'm hungry" within 5 minutes of breakfast. Our next stop is Ullaru.
