Day 3: Izu Peninsular to Lake Suwa
This was another fantastic day, although to be honest all of them were. This was the best moto/road trip of my life! I road up the west coast of Izu Peninsular, including a couple of fruitful diversions (take Route 127, turn left onto Route 18 and head to the coast for some corners to rival the Izu Skyline – in fact better than it if it weren’t for the Skyline’s views) inland which made permanent in my mind the impression that no matter where you ride on Izu you’ll meet the most satisfying twisties anywhere on the planet. I’m aware this is going to get a bit repetitive… it’s hard to describe the sheer thrill of fanging along a quiet road through the hills, not having seen another road user in the past 10 minutes, up, down, gear change, knee down, throw it the other way, knee down, flat out to the next apex. It’s rather plain text-wise but when you’re confronted with all this on a motorcycle it’s hard not to keep saying to yourself, over and over and over ‘THIS IS SO AWESOME I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS SO AWESOME!’. I said this to myself so many times over the past six days I started to wonder if there was something wrong with me. Really though, I found out there had been something very wrong with my life before this trip…
After exiting the peninsular there was a bit of highway slogging to get to Suwa which got tiresome and I was pretty relieved to be able to head to bed. I was able to after finding a very helpful usher at the train station who pointed me to a Y4000 guesthouse across the street from the station. Here is a rather moody panorama at the lake the following morning.
